Prepare for the storm before it starts raining

Take advantage of the calm before the storm

FALL INTO BETTER HABITS

Habit #9 to Fall into Better Habits

In Florida, our hurricane season runs from June 1 until November 30. Crazy, right? It’s a 6-month window of panic on standby. I know what you’re thinking…Why would anyone want to live like that? Well, the storm season may be lousy and the heat unbearable, but the sunsets can’t be beat!

Anyways, preparations typically begin way in advance and evacuations are done long before the storm hits. I mean, we are a peninsula after all so there is literally only one way in and one way out.

Neither the prep work, nor the hoarding of non-perishable food, water and toilet paper, nor the evacuating is nearly as stressful as the 24/7 doomsday predictions from the local weather peeps. They live for this stuff. An active storm season is their chance to shine. They don’t miss an opportunity to tell you what could potentially happen if the storm hits. They act like they have a direct hotline to Mother Nature herself.

After a few years of living here and becoming a storm veteran, I made one of the most important decisions of my life…I stopped watching the news.

If there were ever a legitimate emergency, someone would let me know. I have saved myself countless hours of stress and worry and fear vacillating between whether to stay or to go (#The Clash) simply by keeping myself out of the loop of terror.

Won’t you join me? Instead of being glued to the screen analyzing weather maps as if we knew what all the squiggly lines meant, why not take the opportunity to get ourselves ready for any outcome? You don’t head out to Walmart in the middle of the storm to get supplies. Even they’re not open (#Irma). You buy your batteries before storm season even begins. It’s a comforting feeling knowing you’ve done all you can to make the best of the situation.

BABY STEP

And, just as we actively prepare for a storm outside our homes, we can consistently practice calming, soothing and centering techniques for those storms inside our brains.

In fact, I have loads of meditation videos on my YouTube channel plus I created a playlist called Storms and Other Stressful Stuff for just this reason. You can check it out HERE.

What I want you to remember is this…

Worry never made any situation better.

In fact, it only makes things worse. So instead of worrying, start preparing by practicing how to keep your cool. And I guarantee you’ll feel better whether there’s a storm a-brewin’ or not.

PROGRESS

Then versus Now...

Take a look at last year's Habit then compare it with how you're doing now. How far have you come since last year? Have you made progress? I'll bet you have!

No matter how small the gain…

No matter how many Baby Steps it took…

No matter how painfully slow the progress…

Pat yourself on the back to celebrate how far you've come!!! Because persistence makes progress :)
